Trip to Honfluer
23-25 May 2008

Matt's report for next month's 'Sprint' magazine

Sun, sea and cider on the Cote Fleurie… it was a weekend to remember. Thirteen cars from the region - 2 Cerberas, 4 Griffs, 5 Chimaeras, a V8S and a Tuscan - made the return trip to Honfleur over the bank holiday weekend, and all, just about, made it home to tell the tale.

We met at Folkestone early on Friday morning - which necessitated a very early start from Oxford for most - and we were fortunate that the last remnants of Operation Stack, where the M20 is filled with trucks and is closed to cars, was cleared just hours before our arrival. The Eurotunnel crossing was smooth and uneventful, and warm, sunny weather greeted us on our arrival in Calais.

We took the direct route to Honfleur. Our journey on quiet Autoroutes was fantastic, disrupted only by a pit stop for fuel and to allow the Griffs to cool down, a bit of a blast in a tunnel to entertain those with the noisiest cars, and a protest by fishermen who had occupied a péage, which saved us a few Euros in road tolls, and yielded a large parcel of frozen fish for one lucky - or unlucky - couple.

Once at our destination the cars were quickly parked up in the secure car park behind the hotel, and the search for refreshment began. Indeed, we spent the best part of two days enjoying the harbourside bars and restaurants. A few took day trips to Deauville; others took a boat trip to the Pont de Normandy, the impressive bridge over the Seine estuary over which we had travelled the previous day. And even when it rained, we were all happily gathered in a restaurant, so we were unconcerned.

By Sunday, the weather was again fine, the frozen fish was just a smelly stain on the car park, and it was time to go home. After a quick circuit of the town to bid farewell to the locals, we set off for the coast road home, roofs off for those that could.

An excellent lunch at St Valery-en-Caux was followed by a quick blast back to the port - too quick for the unlucky three who were relieved of a combined total of 270 Euros - for the journey home to (cold and misty) Kent.

Our thanks go to Mike and Jan for organising such a fantastic weekend. Do have a look at the website for details of future events, and join in the banter on the Regional Forum on the main TVR Car Club (look for regional forums on the lefthand menu, then go to TVRCC Oxfordshire Region) website, or better still, come along to the monthly meeting.
